Digital rights management (DRM) is a technology that content owners can use to protect digital media files by encrypting them with a key (a piece of data that locks and unlocks the content). To play a protected ASF file, a consumer must obtain a separate license containing the key. Each license also contains rights, determined by the content owner or license issuer, which specify how the consumer can use the file. Using DRM technology, content owners can deliver songs, videos, and other digital media files over the Internet in a protected file format and control the use of their digital content. Microsoft DRM technology is also supported by the Windows Media Rights Manager, the Windows Media Encoder, and Windows Media Player. For more background information on Microsoft's DRM technology, see the Microsoft Windows Media Web site.

Windows 10 is designed to protect sensitive corporate data not only when it's stored on the device, but also when it leaves it. Currently, BitLocker secures data stored on the machine, and the Azure Rights Management services and Information Rights Management (IRM) in Microsoft Office protects it when it leaves the device. Aug 05, 2015  I have been using Windows Rights Management for some years to protect some files. Occasionally I am asked to sign in and it works again, however I am now completely unable to access my files. I get a box headed Windows Rights Management, which sometimes stays blank and other times asks if I. Ganttman I can only offer additional info that users. I came to this forum thread tonight because after several months ast summer/fall of being unable to use Windows 10 upgrade (from Win 8.1) on my laptop, I finally replaced the hardware with a shiny new Windows 10 ultrabook, upgraded to the Pro version, and installed Office Professional Plus 2016.

I finally got this reply today:

You are receiving this message because you have asked to be notified when we had a process for decrypting your files. I am pleased to announce that we now have such a process.

As a courtesy to users of Microsoft’s RMS for LiveID Trial service, Microsoft will decrypt at no charge up to five Office files. The process for this service will be as follows:

1)Read the Terms and Conditions of this service below.

2)Reply to this message with the phrase “I accept.” Note: Do not change the subject line and do not attach your files to that reply.

3)Following receipt of your acceptance message, you will receive another email from this address acknowledging your message and requesting you submit your encrypted files.

4)Attach up to five files and reply.

5)We will decrypt your files and return them on a first come, first served basis. We make no commitment to a guaranteed time to return your documents, but we don’t expect it to be long (less than a week). Obviously there will be a surge at the beginning which will slow down response rates.

6)IMPORTANT NOTE: The email address sending us the file must be the person who “owns” it (i.e., the creator of the file). We will be running a test that will confirm this is the case before we decrypt. If they do not match we will not decrypt the files.

7)We cannot guarantee we can decrypt every file. This is a “best efforts” service.

8)The documents will be returned to you in an unencrypted manner.

Thank you for your patience and we look forward to helping you transition.
