Additionally, users could buy and download unique WiiWare titles, meaning that buying new games didn’t always entail sloughing off to Walmart or GameStop.

The nice thing about the Wii, however, is that it not only has a lot of great games behind it, but with a few easy modifications, it can be turned into a simple DVD player. This is great if you want to hand the Wii down to your kids and give them a child-friendly gaming platform, but also let them watch movies as well.
(Re)introducing the Homebrew Channel
The Homebrew Channel (HBC) remains one the best and well-known console hacks in recent memory. It’s without a doubt a must-have feature. If you have an old “unBrewed” Wii then there’s no time like the present to change that. After all, the warranty on your Wii is long expired, and you’re probably not doing anything with it anyway.
Of course, the standard warnings and disclaimers apply: any changes or modifications you perform on your Wii are completely up to you and your sole responsibility. It’s really hard to brick a Wii this way, but it could happen.
So what is the Homebrew Channel? It’s simply what it sounds like, a channel, much like the Netflix or Nintendo eShop. Channels are nothing more really than Nintendo’s version of apps. So when you open a channel, all it’s going to do is give you extended functionality above and beyond just playing games. For example, the Netflix channel on the Wii is nothing more than a glorified Netflix app, and so on.
To that end, we might think of the Homebrew Channel as an app launcher channel, which means you can copy special apps and games to your SD card and launch them through the HBC.
In the past, Nintendo has issued system updates intended to improve performance but also remove “unauthorized channels or firmware [that] may impair game play or the Wii console.” The focus of this article will to show you how to install HBC and HackMii soft mods on the latest and presumably last Wii system update (4.3), with a simple exploit called LetterBomb.
We’ve written previously about how to hack your Wii using a Super Smash Brothers Brawl exploit called SmashStack. That exploit requires the Super Smash Brothers Brawl game, which isn’t necessarily hard to get or expensive to purchase, but the method we’ll be showing you has far fewer hoops to jump through.
There are also a number of other methods however, LetterBomb works without a game and only on System Menu 4.3. If you’re interested in learning more about each individual exploit, you can read about them on WilBrew.org.
Using the LetterBomb Exploit to Install HBC
To check your system version, open the Wii System Settings by clicking the round Wii button in the lower-left corner of the System Menu.
Look in the upper-right corner and you’ll see your version number. If it’s any version less than 4.3, then you can either try another exploit or update your Wii now. Just make sure you update your Wii fully to the latest 4.3 update because after you run the exploit, you can’t update your Wii anymore (not that we expect Nintendo to issue anymore patches) because it will break any modifications you apply.
You see the version of our system is 4.3U (U=United States, E=Europe, J=Japan, K=Korea), so we’re good to go.
Wait, don’t back out of the system settings yet, we need one more thing. Click right to Wii System Settings 2, then click “Internet -> Console Information” and copy the MAC address. You will need this to perform the actual hack.
Now, you can back out to the System Menu. The next step has to happen on a PC, so we’ll step away from the Wii to do that.
Executing the Letterbomb Wii Hack
The hack we’re using is called Letterbomb, and while it sounds scary and unpleasant, once you see how it works you’ll understand why.
Gamecube Wii Homebrew Channel
To perform this hack, you need an SD card formatted to FAT16 or FAT32. The size of the SD card isn’t crucial, we found an old 256MB card laying around that is pretty useless as a storage option nowadays, but perfect for this purpose.
Next, you want to visit the Letterbomb website. You’ll need the MAC address from your Wii now. In the following screenshot, we indicate our system menu version (4.3U), input our MAC, and we’ll go ahead and bundle the HackMii installer as well.
Next, you enter the CAPTCHA and click “cut the red wire” to download the Letterbomb zip file.
Take that newly downloaded zip file and extract its contents to your empty SD card.
Next, remove the SD card from your PC and insert it into your Wii. Click on the Mail icon in the lower-right corner and go back one or two days.
You will know you’ve found the right bit of mail when you see a red envelope with a bomb on it. Now’s your chance to bail. If you don’t want to proceed, you’ve made no changes to your Wii.
Otherwise, click on the letter bomb and it will execute the code needed to prepare your Wii to install HBC and HackMii.
You will know everything is a success when you see the following screen warning you to never pay for any of this software, which is provided free of charge to everyone.
Once the “press 1 to continue” text appears, it’s time to install the Homebrew Channel and BootMii.
Installing the Homebrew Channel and BootMii
The HackMii installer is currently at version 1.2. It allows you to do two things, install the all-important HBC and optionally, BootMii. We recommend both.
Click “continue” when you’re ready to proceed.
The next screen is the main menu. Click “install the Homebrew Channel” to begin.
Confirm your intentions by clicking “Yes, continue” or click “no, take me back” if you change your mind.
If you continue, the HBC will install. It won’t take long and once finished, you will see “SUCCESS” in green. Click “Continue” to return to the main menu.
Notice now there’s a new option to “uninstall the Homebrew Channel,” in case you want to undo your changes. The next thing we’ll do is install BootMii, so click “BootMii…” to continue.
BootMii must be installed as IOS (not to be confused with Apple’s mobile operating system iOS), which just means you’re going to have to use HBC to launch it. They’re kind of complicated but here’s more information on what exactly IOSes are, just in case you’re curious.
BootMii requires an SD card to install. You can either use the one already in the Wii, with which you executed the Letterbomb exploit, or you can use another. If your new SD card isn’t formatted properly, you can insert it and click “prepare a SD card” on the BootMii menu screen.
Otherwise, click “yes, continue” as seen in the following screenshot.
The installer will now write all the necessary runtime files to your SD card. Next, it’s time to actually install BootMii onto your Wii, once more click “yes, continue.”
Once finished, you’ll again be treated to a green “SUCCESS” and you can click “Continue.”
Back on the main menu, you can exit from the HackMii installer and return to the main Wii System Menu.
Enjoying the Fruits of Your Labor
Welcome back to the System Menu. Notice anything different? You’ve got a new addition, the Homebrew Channel!
By default, your installation of the Homebrew Channel won’t have any apps or games on it. You have to add those to your SD card’s Apps folder (you’ll need to do this on your PC). There’s no need to search around for apps, you can find a comprehensive list of them here.
Let us not forget BootMill, which can be booted from a submenu in the HBC. Tap the Home button on the Wiimote to access it.
The BootMii menu can be navigated by using a GameCube controller, or barring that, you can use the Power button on the console to step through the options and the Reset button to select.
BootMii is going to be an essential tool if you plan on doing any further hacking. The fourth option, with the gears, is intended to allow you to backup and restore your NAND, which is your system memory.

If you want to hack, or homebrew, your Wii, don't buy a kit. All the homebrew tools you need can be found for free on the internet.
If you don’t know what homebrewing is, read our introduction to the fascinating world of Wii homebrew.
Before You Begin
Nintendo didn't design the Wii to support homebrewing. So, there's no guarantee that using homebrew software won't harm your Wii. You are responsible for any problems that arise from installing Wii homebrew software. Proceed at your own risk. It's also possible that installing homebrew software could void your warranty.
Be aware, too, that Nintendo updates to the Wii may break your Homebrew Channel (or brick your Wii), so don't update the Wii system after installing Homebrew. To prevent Nintendo from automatically updating your system, turn off WiiConnect24. To do so, select Options, then select Wii Settings. You'll find WiiConnect24 on page 2. Also, prevent new games from attempting to update the system.
To install the homebrew software on a Wii, you'll need:
- A Wii console
- An SD card formatted for FAT16 or FAT32
- A computer with internet access
- An SD card reader for the computer
Prepare Your SD Card, and Choose Your Installation Method
Before you begin, format the SD card for FAT16. Advice from Yahoo! Answers claims that the Wii reads and writes faster using FAT16 than it does using FAT32.
If you used the SD card before to install homebrew software, you may see a file on the card called boot.dol. If so, delete or rename it. Similarly, if you see a folder called private, delete or rename it.
If you're using a new SD card, follow the instructions to format it on a Mac or on a PC running Windows.
You can either copy homebrew applications to the SD card or wait until you've verified that everything was installed properly. Go to the Install Homebrew Software section of this article to learn how to install homebrew applications on an SD card.
The method you use to install homebrew software varies according to your Wii console's operating system. To determine which version of the operating system the Wii runs, go to Wii Options and select Wii Settings. The operating system version number appears in the upper-right corner. If the Wii runs version 4.3, use the LetterBomb method; if the Wii runs version 4.2 or earlier, use the Bannerbomb method.
Download LetterBomb, Then Copy It to Your SD Card
If you have a new Wii, this procedure reportedly won't work until there is at least one message in your Wii Message Board. If the Wii is new and you have no messages, create a memo on the Wii. To create a memo, select the envelope inside a circle located in the lower-right corner of the main menu. In the Wii Message Board, select create message, select memo, then write and post a memo.
Use the LetterBomb method if the Wii console's operating system is version 4.3.
Open a browser, then go to the LetterBomb home page.
On the LetterBomb page, go to System Menu Version, then select the option that corresponds to the operating system version.
In the MAC Address section, enter the media access control (MAC) address of the Wii. If you don't know the MAC address, here's how to find it:
- Select Wii Options.
- Select Wii Settings.
- On page 2 of Wii Settings, select Internet.
- Select Console Information.
Make sure that Bundle the HackMii Installer for me is selected.
In the reCAPTCHA, provide the required information.
Select Cut the red wire or Cut the blue wire. It doesn't matter which option you select; either option downloads the file.
Begin Homebrew Installation (LetterBomb Method)
On the Wii console, open the door next to the game disc slot to access the SD card slot. Insert the SD card so that the top of the card faces the game disc slot. If the card goes only partway in, it was inserted backward or upside down.
Turn on the Wii.
In the main menu, select the envelope in the circle located in the lower-right corner of the screen.
In your Wii Message Board, look for a special message, which is indicated by a red envelope that contains a cartoon bomb.
This message may be in yesterday's mail. Select the left arrow to go to the previous day. According to the LetterBomb instructions, the message could also turn up today or two days ago.
Select the envelope.
Install the Homebrew Channel (you'll find instructions in the Install the Homebrew Channel section below).
Copy the Necessary Software to an SD Card (Bannerbomb Method)
To copy the software, go to Bannerbomb, and follow the instructions. The Bannerbomb instructions show you how to download Bannerbomb, extract it, and copy the extracted file to the SD card.

Next, download the HackMii Installer, and then extract it. Copy installer.elf to the SD card’s root directory, and rename it boot.elf.
The Bannerbomb site offers a few alternate versions of the software. If the main version doesn't work for you, try the others one by one until you find one that works on your Wii.
Install Homebrew (Bannerbomb Method)
Now, you're ready to install homebrew. In this process, you copy boot.dol/elf from the SD card and load it.
Turn on the Wii.
Select Wii Menu, then select Wii (the circle in the lower-left corner).
Select Data Management.
On the Wii console, open the door next to the game disc slot to access the SD card slot. Insert the SD card so that the top of the card faces the game disc slot. If the card goes only partway in, it's backward or upside down.
If prompted to load boot.dol/elf, select Yes.
Install the Homebrew Channel
A loading screen appears, followed by a black screen with white text telling you to demand your money back if you paid for this software. After a few seconds, the installer prompts you to press 1 on the Wii remote.
Perform the following steps using the Wii remote. Highlight items on the screen, then press A on the remote to select them.
A screen appears indicating whether the homebrew items can be installed. When using the LetterBomb method on an older Wii, choose to install BootMii as either boot2 or IOS. The Readme file included with LetterBomb explains the pros and cons of the two choices. Newer Wii consoles allow only the IOS method.
Select Continue, then press A.
Select Install The Homebrew Channel, then press A.
When prompted to install the channel, select continue, then press A.
From this screen, you can also run BootMii, the installer. If you're using the Bannerbomb method, there's a DVDx option.
When installation is complete, press A to continue.
When the software is installed, select Exit, then press A.
If you're using Bannerbomb, use the same procedure to install DVDx, which uses the Wii as a DVD player (if you install media-playing software such as MPlayer CE). Find and install DVDx using the Homebrew Browser.
After you exit, an indicator shows that the SD card is loading. When loading is complete, the Homebrew Channel appears. If you copied homebrew applications into the apps folder of the SD card, you'll see them here; otherwise, you'll see a screen with bubbles floating on it. Press home on the remote, then select exit to go to the main Wii menu. The Homebrew Channel appears as one of your channels.
